Vineyard Schloss Halbturn – Wine growing area Burgenland

SCHLOSS HALBTURN, the most important Baroque building in the Burgenland which once served as a hunting and summer residence for the Emperor. The birth of the Schloss Halbturn vineyard was in the Jois (Jungenberg). It was here that Count Poth established the first vineyards in the year 1214 by the purchase of 14 farms from the Hungarian Altenburg manor.

In 1960, the first vineyard was planted by Baron Paul Waldbott-Bassenheim in an old estate called Wittmannshof at the side of Schloss Halbturn.

In 2001 this traditional enterprise close to the Hungarian border was ambitiously restructured. On the initiative of Baroness Marietheres Waldbott-Bassenheim and under the management of Markus Graf zu Kœnigsegg, the nephew of the owner’s family, no cost or effort was spared to make the Schloss Halbturn again one of the leading vineyards in the country. Altogether 100 acres of the 160 acres of the whole vineyard were cleared and replanted. In addition, the historic terraces on the Jungenberg were revitalised.

In the cellar as well, no stone was left unturned. The result is probably one of the most beautiful cellars in the country in the Bordelais style (chai) and the very best cellar technology.

Today the associated wine estate of Schloss Halbturn is owned by the families of Markus Graf zu Koenigsegg-Aulendorf, Max Erbgraf zu Koenigsegg-Aulendorf
and Dieter Hoffmann-Unzog.

Since its first vintage in 2002, the Schloss Halbturn team has proved its qualities. The honours acquired nationally and abroad demonstrate this (among other awards: the Falstaff Sortensieger 2004, 2005 and 2006, winner of the VINARIA red wine final, winner of the Pinot Noir Cup in Germany, Gold Medals in Japan and London, Robert Parker jun.).

WITTMANNSHOF (100 acres, Halbturn). The vineyard of Wittmannshof Halbturn is located next to Schloss Halbturn. In 1960, this former farmland became the largest contiguous vineyard in private hands in Austria. 2001 saw the beginning of the restructuring of the Schloss Halbturn vineyard named after an old estate and a survey was carried out in accordance with the latest geological and oenological developments resulting in a division into 6 areas depending on the soil profile in each area. Based on the results of this survey, most of the vineyard was replanted predominantly with red wines

Soil profile: Red crushed stone soil with lime sediment layers

Varieties: Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, Pinot Noir, St. Laurent, Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay

JUNGENBERG (25 acres, Jois). The Jungenberg vineyard is at the tip of Neusiedlersee which serves as a large climatic modulator in Jois. Even as early as 1214, there was the first documentary mention of this slope as a vineyard location. Simultaneously, this location saw the birth of the Schloss Halbturn vineyard.

With the beginning of the restructuring, the historic terraces of Jungenberg were revitalised. This location has all the criteria which wine experts describe with the phrase ‘grand terroir’: unique soil conditions, optimum exposure to the sun, proximity to the Neusiedlersee and the micro-climate resulting from it as well as a long and rich history.

Again the surveys carried out on the soil led to a division into 4 areas (terraces, south slope, north slope, Auflangen).

Soil profile: Shell limestone soil with slate layers and high clay content, quartz

Varieties: Pinot Noir, Blaufränkisch, Cabernet, Merlot, Riesling

LEITHABERG (37 acres, Kleinhöflein and Eisenstadt). The Leithaberg vineyard has been under our management since 2001. Thus this location is the most recent possession of Schloss Halbturn but represents on average the oldest plants of all our vineyards. The Leithagebirge, shortened in the vernacular to Leithaberg, is the mountain chain on the west side of the Neusiedlersee which extends from Jois to Grosshöflein.

Soil profile: Gneiss and mica slate in the core, solidified tertiary shell limestone (so-called ‘Leitha lime’), loam and black earth

Varieties: Green Veltliner, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Riesling, Blaufränkisch, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Zweigelt, Cabernet
